The hostel

Here at Bråtadal life is simple and natural. You are able to enjoy the quiet and darkness in the evening and smell the aroma of the forest and stoneoven baked bread. Despite the peacefulness it is not hard to imagine how hundreds of townchildren have spent their summers here at childrens camp. Today just like them you can enjoy a peaceful swim in the lake, look for frogs & toads in the forest and eat homemade jam sandwiches on the veranda. That peaceful feeling is always here.

Our 2-berth bedrooms are typical of those times with wallpaper and furniture from the 30’s and 40’s. The beds have sprung mattresses except the bunk beds and our lovely pillows and duvets are of high quality.

Pets are welcome in the small cottage but are not allowed into the main building. Communal rooms are the self-catering kitchen, dining room, living-room and the generous wooden deck. These become a natural place to socialize and meet new friends. Our self-catering kitchen is smart designed with lots of space so many people can easily cook at the same time.
We have chosen not to have a television in order to enhance our peacefull environment. In the bookcase you will find books about nature, old fashioned building techniques and magazines.

An ideal place for children in the big house there is a childrens corner with books, puzzles, games, Duplo and dolls. Outside there is a big lawn for ball games, a sandpit and the beach a few minutes away.
In the earth built extension you will find our sanity unit. It is called rammed, earth built because the walls are made of packed clay. The technique is called pise’. Here you find separation toilets and plenty of showers.

We use recycled energy sources such as wind power, solar energy, earth warmth and bio fuel. We even drive a gas powered car.

Flowers and plants are beautiful and important for the eye. As a guest you can wander around in our garden and with the help of small signs experience over 60 different perennials. We also grow our own cut flowers to use on the tables in the hostel.

Bråtadal hostel is a member of the STF family (Swedish tourist association). This means that members have a discount when they stay here. You can become a member on arrival. We also sell Hostelling International card. The hostel is privately owned and we pay a franchise sum to STF.
